How much will it cost?
As there are a variety of reasons for having a website there is also a wide range of website designs. A three page site with a Home page, a Products page, an About page, and email contact via a simple mail function could be on the net using free hosting for as little as about AUS $210.00 whereas the same site with your own .com domain name, plus 2-3 years paid professional hosting would cost around AUS $350.
There are many variations. Remember to keep an eye on our monthly specials for a bargain that suits you.
An average 5-7 page site including .com.au (requires Australian ABN to secure and is more expensive than .com domain, see below) could average out at:
- 30 .. Prefab layout
- 45 .. Upload and setup
- 270 .. Design coding 6 pages
- 60 .. 2 years Australian domain; can be cheaper in host/domain package.
- 100 .. 1 year paid hosting (inc. PHP to facilitate ordering/contact page)
- __________________
505 .. $Aust TOTAL for 6 pages hosted at yoursitename.com.au- __________________
Prices are dependant upon many variables; obviously a page like this F.A.Q. page with many in-page links and lots of finicky coding would be more time consuming than a page with say 3-4 paragraphs of text and 2 images.
Nevertheless, there's nothing to stop you starting off with a 3 page site with free hosting and gradually upgrade to more pages and your own domain name on pro hosting. Flexibility is our middle name. No problems.
Conversely, a large database driven website displaying many, many products could easily run up a bill of between AUS $600 and up to or even over AUS $1100.00 for the site alone regardless of hosting. BUT .. that's still much cheaper than our competitors.
What's the difference between a .com and a .com.au domain name?
Good question, glad you asked. Anyone can secure a .com domain and often they are included free during the first year of paid hosting and from then on from as little as US$10.00 per year (with the right supplier).
A .com.au domain is ONLY for businesses with an Australian ABN which needs to be quoted when ordering your .com domain. These Australian commercial domains usually cost around AUS $60.00 for 2 years. Cheaper prices are often available if ordering a hosting and domain package. We are happy to recommend a suitable host and make ALL arrangements for you.
Please note: An Australian commercial domain shows your visitors that you are an Australian business entity and gives prospects the security of knowing that you can be economically reached by telephone and that you are answerable to the Australian Dep't of Fair Trading, whereas an American .com domain gives no such assurance, not even the assurance that you could be dealing with an American business.
What should I know before my website is built?
The main thing to understand about your website is the purpose of your website. Form follows function as they say. It's important to understand what you want to achieve from your site. Buying a milk truck to haul rocks is not logical, neither is getting a 3 page website to display 5000 photographic images that you are selling online.
SCENARIO 1: To illustrate the point, an appropriate scenario may be painted: A fabric designer who is promoting her designs online and hosting a series of expositions to display the fabrics. She could simply use one page to give details of the functions including slideshows displaying various designs, then another page with further information and an "E-RSVP" form to accept bookings in advance.
SCENARIO 2: A three or four page site would be useful to display information regarding your musical band or thesbian group, detailing where and when to view performances plus group member details, images, tryouts, downloadable information or brochures, etc. These can be hosted using free or paid hosting as required, albeit paid hosting with your own domain assumes a more professional status.
It's great if you can have a good idea of what is going to be in your pages, what pages you want, and whether they simply display images and info and whether you need a contact form (as distinct from a simple mail link), or even a database, as early in the piece as possible as knowing where you wish to go with your website will save you money in the long run. Talk to Tweed Web Design for some no-obligation advice on how to ascertain your needs.

Do I need to write the contents of my pages?
We can help but generally speaking, yes, you do, unless of course money is no object and you'd like to get Tweed Web Design to write your pages for you. Only you know exactly what text you want to appear on your pages. Tweed Web Design are happy to help with the wording and marketing style if you like but you know your business or event better than anyone else; in the end the final result is your choice. Usually the client writes the copy and Tweed Web Design add that copy and any images you have to your website.
You can save time and money by typing the text into a Microsoft Notepad file (free with Windows, look under All Programs >> Accessories >> Notepad) or in a Microsoft Word file (comes with Office program), so that we can copy and paste directly from your file and simply add the xhtml and css formatting.
What we can show you is our product line up which includes some demonstration websites that already have text in them to give you an idea of how it can be done. If it comes down to it, we are be happy to write text for the whole website; remember of course, that the more time you save the more money you save.
Do I need to supply my own photographs?
Well, yes and no. We can point you in the direction of a professional photographer if you wish. A more elegant solution might be to use your own or a borrowed camera to take photos and let Tweed Web Design edit the photos to make them more suitable for the web. I guess it all depends on how much you want to spend. Images of individual products might be best taken by a professional who specialises in this type of photography. Nevertheless, don't waste money unnecessarily. It depends on your budget.
Top of pageDo I need my own computer and internet connection?
No, no, no, definitely no. If you don't have an internet connection or even a computer, you can access the internet via your local library (members only, I believe) or an internet cafe. We are happy to show you were and even how if need be.
Top of pageWho will see my website?
Another important question. Whilst anyone can see your website, only those persons who are aware of your website and are interested in the content of your website will see it.
How to make people aware of your website.
- Tweed Web Design include a free search engine optomisation and keyword package on websites that we build, which assists you to get good results in search engines like Google, Yahoo, etc.
See below for other things you may wish to do to make/keep people aware of your website. - Personally tell your friends, family, associates, and customers about your website when you contact them and give them your web address.
- Include your web address on all business media such as letterheads, business cards, address stickers, brochures, advertising, invoices, receipts, yellow pages, etc.
- Include your web address after your "signature" on all emails, whether business or not.
- Reciprocal advertising banners on the website of a reputable, non-competitive business acquaintance or associate.
- Pay for a Google Adwords campaign.
- A good E-marketing campaign. See our marketing newsletter for general marketing advice.
- Essentially, keep your web address in people's minds any way you can.
How do I know that my website will work? Is there a guarantee?
All Tweed Web Design websites, except a few complex top end database and highly customised layouts, are prefabricated design layouts that have been tested in a wide variety of web browsers. Please refer to our guarantee at the right hand top of the page.
Top of pageIs there any web design work that Tweed Web Design DON'T do?
Whilst we have extensive experience at many facets of web design and web development, we do not feel comfortable with setting up Secure Socket Layer connections to permit your customers to make purchases directly over the net via credit card. Rather than risk your money, your client's money, and our reputation, we currently prefer to omit this facility from our product line. Don't worry, it's in the pipeline, we are working on it.
Tweed Web Design are more than happy to refer you to someone experienced in Secure Socket Layer should you deem this facility to be necessary.
Paypal
However, for many online sales Paypal (link opens in a new window) is an excellent and very affordable solution, offering its own shopping cart for online sales and no expensive monthly fees, just a small percentage of your sales.
Credit card payment gateways demand a merchant account with your bank, and expensive monthly payments, so if you are not selling large amounts you will probably be losing money with a credit card processing account ... better to stick with Paypal till it becomes good economic sense to facilitate credit card payments by which time it will be worth the high setup and maintenence cost.

Active Server Pages (ASP) is another aspect of web development that is outside of our experience; we prefer to use the cheaper and more widely utilised PHP server page system in conjunction with MySQL database.
_________________________________________________
Also, we are not particularly experienced at using AJAX but are willing to try at client's request. With AJAX there is no security risk. AJAX is another form of modern server based programming that has a download speed advantage. See our use of AJAX as on online cookbook. Cookbook will open in a new browser window.
_________________________________________________
As stated above, we don't normally compose the text and images for your website. We do however, add the text that you compose and your images to your website AND we ARE willing to write your web copy for you (provided we have a rough idea of what to write) but will charge a standard hourly rate for this service. We have been told on more than one occasion that we posess a natural flair for writing copy.
Is after sales assistance available?
Tweed Web Design are here to make your transition to the cyber-world as painless as possible. We offer a guarantee on our work and believe that you'll feel that you have a good deal. We are able to answer questions and assist with any situations that may arise. We are happy to give small amounts of time for advice and planning, free of charge but continued or extended use of us as a help desk facility must incur a charge. Use sparingly.
Top of pageWhich payment methods do Tweed Web Design accept?
We are happy to accept payment via Paypal, cheques, bank cheques, bank deposit, money orders or cash (cash must be delivered to our office in person). All cheques must clear before payment is considered accepted. Feel free to telephone or email us to advise of bank deposits.
Top of pageWill Tweed Web Design organise my domain name and hosting?
We organise everything including domain name, hosting and subsequent upload(s) so that your website is online with no headaches for you. If you prefer you may organise your own domain and host server but we still need access to the server if we are to upload.
We hope that this list of questions is able to answer all of your questions. Feel free to contact us should you have a question not covered by our F.A.Q..
